ST. GEORGE - Ellen Lyman Atkin, age 88, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009 of Myelodysplastic Syndrome. She was born September 28, 1920 in Monticello, Utah, to Albert R. Lyman and Mary Ellen Perkins, the 12th of 15 children.

Ellen enjoyed her childhood, growing up in Blanding, Utah, where she attended school and graduated from San Juan High School in 1939. She married William Floyd Atkin on November 30, 1940, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Ellen was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has served faithfully in leadership and teaching positions, as well as a full-time missionary with her husband in Samoa and New Zealand. She also served as a temple worker in the St. George LDS Temple.

Ellen and Floyd have enjoyed extensive travel throughout the world and have spent many happy hours in the mountains of southern Utah with their family and friends, camping, hiking, picnicking, fishing, pine nut picking, and deer hunting.

Surviving are her loving husband, Floyd; daughter, Marilyn (Doug) Allen of Thatcher, AZ; sons, Dale (Chris) Atkin of St. George, Scott (Genevieve) Atkin of Cedar City, UT; daughter-in-law, Elisabet Thor of Portland, OR; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Edith Frost of Centerville, UT. Ellen was preceded in death by her son, Curtis Lyman Atkin; her parents and siblings, Casse Monson, Platte DeAlton, Enone Hardman, Mead, Sara, Klar Bishop, Karl, Mark, Dane, Vint, Ann Reeves, Alberta O'Brien, and Guen Smith.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 8, 2009, 11:00 a.m., at the Morningside Ward Chapel, 879 S. River Rd., St. George, UT. A viewing will be held Thursday, May 7, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, UT, and again on Friday, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Church. Interment will take place at the St. George City Cemetery.
